    Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. (Romans 8:34 ESV)

    I have a record, said a Wesleyan missionary laboring in the West Indies, of two hundred persons, young and old, who received the most direct evidence of the forgiveness of their sins while singing "Arise, My Soul." The conversion of the greater number of these persons took place while I was a missionary abroad.
    Sankey, Ira David. My Life and the Story of the Gospel Hymns. Harper & Brothers, 1906. p. 115.

    I first heard "Arise, My Soul, Arise" at church in Louisville, KY. It's a more upbeat tune with lyrics of significant depth--speaking the life we have in Christ, where the open line of the song calls our own souls to rise from the grave of spiritual death.

    Notably, this hymn was originally written by Charles Wesley; the new melody here is from Indelible Grace, and performed by modern hymn singer/writer Matthew Smith. (His music is hecka awesome--you should totally listen to him!)

    Arise, My Soul, Arise is surely a gospel-centered hymn, focusing on the atoning work of Jesus Christ: how His blood appears before the throne of God for us; how His redeeming love pleads for every person's salvation; how His nail pierced wounds pours effectual prayers for our forgiveness; how Christ's Spirit speaks to the Father for our new birth in Him; and how through God's Son we have no fear but confidence to call God our Abba Father!

    What an uplifting hymn this is!
    May it be a classic in our churches to be sung for years to come :).

    Chords | Lead Sheet

    1) Arise, my soul, arise; shake off thy guilty fears;
    The bleeding sacrifice in my behalf appears:
    Before the throne my surety stands,
    Before the throne my surety stands,
    My name is written on His hands.

    Arise, arise, arise
    Arise, my soul, arise!
    Arise, arise, arise
    Arise, my soul, arise!
    Shake off your guilty fears and rise!

    2) He ever lives above, for me to intercede;
    His all redeeming love, His precious blood, to plead:
    His blood atoned for all our race,
    His blood atoned for all our race,
    And sprinkles now the throne of grace.

    3) Five bleeding wounds He bears; received on Calvary;
    They pour effectual prayers; they strongly plead for me:
    Forgive him, O forgive, they cry,
    Forgive him, O forgive, they cry,
    Nor let that ransomed sinner die!

    4) The Father hears Him pray, His dear anointed One;
    He cannot turn away, the presence of His Son;
    His Spirit answers to the blood,
    His Spirit answers to the blood,
    And tells me I am born of God.

    5) My God is reconciled; His pardoning voice I hear;
    He owns me for His child; I can no longer fear:
    With confidence I now draw nigh,
    With confidence I now draw nigh,
    And Father, Abba, Father, cry.

    The final few days of Jesus' earthly life share remarkable parallels with Daniel's brush with the furry felines in Daniel 6.

    Both Daniel and Jesus . . .

    . . . are lonely faithful Israelites who find themselves in a land under Gentile rule (Dan 6:1);

    . . . are filled with God's Spirit (Dan 6:3; Luke 4:1, 14);

    . . . are conspired against by ill-meaning, jealous men of influence (Dan 6:4;Matt 26:3-4);

    . . . are above reproach, making it impossible for their antagonists to find fault with them (Dan 6:4; Matt 26:59-60);

    . . . are found guilty through treachery (Dan 6:4-9; Matt 27:20);

    . . . pray to God, alone, before the impending arrest (Dan 6:10; Matt 26:36);

    . . . are presented to a Gentile ruler who would prefer to side with the accused (Dan 6:14; John 19:4);

    . . . have a stone rolled over the opening of where they have been placed (Dan 6:17; Matt 27:60);

    . . . are, against expectation, found alive in the morning (Dan 6:19; Matt 28:5-6)

    . . . are brought up out of a hole in the ground where the stone has now been removed (Dan 6:23; Matt 28:6);

    . . . convince a Gentile observer that they were blameless (Dan 6:22-23; Mark 15:39).

    There is one great difference, of course. Daniel was spared; Jesus was not. From one perspective, of course, both Daniel and Jesus were unjustly accused, arraigned, and placed in a hole out of which they both miraculously arose in full vindication. Yet the fearful demise to which Daniel was handed over never overtook him. He escaped. He was spared. The fearful demise to which Jesus was handed over did overtake him (Mark 14:34; 15:24). He did not escape. He was not spared.

    I'm not saying Matthew or any of the other Gospel writers had Daniel 6 in mind as they wrote. Maybe they did, maybe not. For myself, I find it hard to imagine that the thought never crossed their mind, in light of how well all four obviously knew their Bibles.

    Dear family & friends,

    We regret to inform you of some extremely sad news.

    About three weeks ago, we found out that Alex's application for R1 (religious worker) work visa applied by Tri Valley Chinese Bible Church (TCBC) was denied.  [Immigration's reasoning was basically that I/Alex is Southern Baptist, but the church is non-denominational; thus to Immigration we are of differing religious denominational types.]

    Since then, TCBC has consulted w/ an immigration attorney to see whether we can appeal against the denial.

    However, it seems that currently, our best option may be to file for K1 (fiancé) visa instead. With this option, it will take an average of 5months time for all the paper work to process and interviews with the immigration.

    Therefore, because of these disappointing & discouraging events, our wedding in California (that was previously scheduled for January) is now postponed until Spring 2012.
    **Friends planning to attend our wedding: please don't purchase your air ticket until further notice.

    Prayer Requests:
    - First and foremost, peace & comfort for Vivian & Alex.
    - Wisdom and discernment in proceedings and completion of paperwork for immigration.
    - Patience for all paperwork to go through immigration smoothly and as speedily as possible.
    - Remembering God's faithfulness and His sovereignty in the midst of it all.
    - To continue to encourage one another in this time of waiting.
    - Endure and persevere, trusting that all things work for the our good.
    - Be productive with our times apart, for Vivian to continue to be earnest in job search and for Alex to pursue a regular routine while waiting in Toronto.

    Humbly, clinging to Christ,

    Sorry for the delay of this week's Singalong Sunday. I had a few of these songs lined up but didn't yet get a chance to meditate on them and share a short blurb about it.

    Whate'er My God Ordains Is Right. Indeed, this hymn is a difficult to swallow when you are in the midst of difficulties. "Difficulties" to put it lightly. When everything that can go wrong, the perspective promoted by the songwriter here is most difficult to embrace. To even open your mouth to sing that title line is heart-wrenching--"whatever my God ordains is right".

    After all, how can it be right at all, all of life's disappointments? Yet somehow, the truth remains: God is the ultimate, sovereign cause of all things. "All things" includes what I am going through right now; and somehow it is for my good and for God's glory. Though now, temporarily, maybe we just don't have the clarity of vision to see our circumstances in God's perspective yet.

    Let this song encourage our hearts to embrace God's perspective.

    Whate'er My God Ordains Is Right
    Performed by Indelible Grace
    Words: Samuel Rodigast.
    Music: David Braud.

    Lead Sheet | Chords

    1. Whate’er my God ordains is right,
    Holy His will abideth.
    I will be still whate’er He does,
    And follow where He guideth.
    He is my God,
    Though dark my road.
    He holds me that I shall not fall
    Wherefore to Him I leave it all

    2. Whate’er my God ordains is right,
    He never will deceive me
    He leads me by the proper path,
    I know He will not leave me
    I take, content,
    What He hath sent
    His hand can turn my griefs away
    And patiently I wait His day

    3. Whate’er my God ordains is right,
    Though now this cup in drinking
    May bitter seem to my faint heart,
    I take it all unshrinking
    My God is true,
    Each morn anew
    Sweet comfort yet shall fill my heart
    And pain and sorrow shall depart

    4. Whate’er my God ordains is right,
    Here shall my stand be taken
    Though sorrow, need, or death be mine,
    Yet I am not forsaken
    My Father’s care
    Is round me there
    He holds me that I shall not fall
    And so to Him I leave it all

    The following is a 4-pronged holistic treatment plan for Christians with depression that David P. Murray proposes in chapter 5 of "Christians Get Depressed Too".  As one who has to care for and deal with a close loved one with severe depression, I consider this an tremendously valuable resource. I hope it can be a blessing to all:
